What to Wear
Think about the purpose of your photos. If the only reason for your mini session is to go onto a Christmas card... then go for the fun pajama look, or red and green outfits! Those are super fun for Christmas !! But... if you want these images to serve as your yearly family portraits that you hang on the wall in a huge canvas and to give as gifts, please take in the following considerations!
Colors:
The colors of your outfits can totally transform how your images look. If you LOVE that bright and bold style that I do, then make sure you take this section into consideration. Select lighter tones and more muted shades. By avoiding crazy colors and patterns it will help bring all the attention to your faces, and the emotions behind the photos. The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, and greens mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown, navy, emerald greens, and white.
Women:
Long, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to the photos. There is so many beautiful poses we can create with a long beautiful dress! Short length skirts and dresses photograph beautiful as well, but may not be the best option with small children. Ya'll dresses and skirts always look the most stunning on camera because they really flatter the female body!
Men:
Put on some khaki pants with a nice polo or solid button up shirt. Are you more of a jean guy? Dress it up with a navy sports coat and some brown boots or shoes! I would recommend long fitted pants over shorts to draw attention to his face! Solid shades of grey and navy are usually great compliments to women's outfits.
Coordinating the Family:
As you're coordinating the whole family, keep in mind that your outfits will look the best on camera if the palette and wardrobe pieces you choose don't actually " match". The goal is to visually break up the colors and shades so that you are not all wearing the same color on top and bottom. I encourage you to plan each outfit with dominant colors and accent colors in mind. Have each person in the family have a different dominant color or main color that you see in the photo and accent their wardrobes with a dominant color from someone else.
Example :
Mom wears dusty rose dress, blue earrings, and nude shoes. Dad wears White button down, grey pants, brown shoes, and a blue tie or blue sports coat. Daughter wears blue top with white tulle skirt. Son wears white shirt with navy pants, and and brown shoes and possibly even suspenders. Now each person has their own dominant color and it is still coordinated and goes well together.
I get it if you're like.. BUT BRITTANY... It's fall. We want fall colors. You can apply these same concepts that I just talked about and apply it to a fall palette. Just realize that colors make your pictures, and you should still try to stick to solids and neutrals!
Prepping children:
Pack a bag with water, snacks, and small objects that can help me get their attention.
Older kids: Explain how important this is and even maybe bribe them with a treat after in they are on their best behavior. For all kids, Make sure they come with bellies full and well rested.
Don't forget to give them grace. Some days don't go as planned and that is OKAY. I have seen it all and will make it a goal to create beautiful images no matter their moods. The idea is for the WHOLE family to have fun while creating these images.
Please email me or message me if you have any questions or if you are ready to book!
XOXO,
Brittany
